Shore Excursions from Livorno: Florence, Pisa or Wine Country?

If Livorno is one of the stops on your Mediterranean cruise, you may already be wondering how to make the most of your day in Tuscany.

If you’ve started planning your day in port, you’ve probably already realized that you have a lot of choices. Florence, Pisa, the Tuscan countryside, a winery, Lucca — or maybe simply staying in Livorno and enjoying a slower day by the sea.

And if this is your first time cruising to Tuscany, it can honestly be a little confusing.

I’m Valentina, a local licensed tour guide, and I’ve been showing travelers around Livorno, Pisa and Florence since 2007. I work with many American cruise passengers, and one of the questions I hear most often is:

“What should we do during our day in Livorno?”

The answer really depends on you.

So let me walk you through the possibilities.

Can You Visit Florence and Pisa from Livorno Cruise Port in One Day?

Yes! and for first-time visitors, this is probably the most popular shore excursion from Livorno.

Livorno is the main cruise gateway to this part of Tuscany, and both Pisa and Florence can be visited during a full day in port when the itinerary is planned carefully. Livorno is approximately 20 kilometers from Pisa and about 100 kilometers from Florence.

If this is your first trip to Italy and seeing Michelangelo’s David, the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio and the Leaning Tower of Pisa has always been on your list, combining Florence and Pisa can make a lot of sense.

With a private shore excursion, the day can also be planned around what you actually want to see rather than following a large group from stop to stop.

Some travelers want to spend most of their time in Florence and make a shorter stop in Pisa.

Others absolutely want to climb the Leaning Tower.

Some want to visit the Accademia Gallery.

And some would rather skip museums completely, wander through Florence, have a good lunch and enjoy the city.

That’s exactly why I like private tours.

What Does “Private Shore Excursion” Actually Mean?

This is something I want to explain because I get emails about it all the time.

Sometimes someone writes:

“Hi Valentina! Do you have two spots available on your Florence and Pisa tour?”

I don’t actually run scheduled group tours with individual seats.

When you book an excursion with me, the tour is private for your group.

It might be just the two of you, your family, or a group of friends traveling together.

I don’t add strangers to your tour to fill empty seats.

So instead of purchasing two spots on a scheduled excursion, you contact me and we plan a private day based on your cruise schedule, the size of your group and what you would most like to experience.

If you happen to meet another couple or family on your cruise and want to organize the excursion together, that’s absolutely possible too — but the group is yours.

Is Florence Worth the Drive from Livorno?

If you have never been to Florence, my answer is usually yes.

Florence is extraordinary.

You’re talking about Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Brunelleschi, the Medici family, the Renaissance all concentrated in a city you can actually explore on foot.

But there is something cruise passengers sometimes don’t realize when they first look at their itinerary:

Florence is not right next to the port.

A day there requires travel time, so good planning really matters.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go. It simply means that your itinerary should be realistic.

I would much rather show you Florence properly than turn your vacation into a race where everyone spends the day watching the clock.

What About Pisa?

Pisa is much closer to Livorno, which makes it very easy to include in many shore excursions.

And yes, the Leaning Tower really is fun to see in person.

But Pisa is more than one funny-looking tower.

The Piazza dei Miracoli is one of Italy’s great monumental complexes, with the Cathedral, Baptistery, Camposanto and the famous Tower all together in one beautiful square.

If you have enough time, you can also reserve tickets to climb the Tower or visit the monuments rather than simply stopping for a photograph.

What If I’ve Already Been to Florence and Pisa?

This is where things get interesting.

You’re in Tuscany. You absolutely do not have to spend your day doing exactly what everyone else on the ship is doing.

If you’ve already visited Florence and Pisa or simply want something more relaxed — we can look at completely different possibilities.

You might prefer:

• the Tuscan countryside
• a winery and wine tasting
• Bolgheri and the Super Tuscan wine area
• Lucca
• a combination of a small town and countryside
• Livorno and the Tuscan coast

Sometimes repeat visitors tell me afterward that their quieter day in Tuscany ended up being one of their favorite days of the entire cruise.

Can You Visit a Tuscan Winery from Livorno Cruise Port?

Absolutely.

For travelers who picture Tuscany as cypress trees, vineyards, olive groves and a long lunch with a glass of wine, a countryside excursion can be a wonderful alternative to a busy sightseeing day.

And being based in Livorno gives you another interesting possibility: the beautiful wine country along the Tuscan coast.

The Bolgheri area is famous for some of Italy’s celebrated Super Tuscan wines, and it offers a completely different atmosphere from Florence.

This kind of day works particularly well for travelers who have already visited Tuscany’s major cities or simply want to slow down.

Is Livorno Worth Visiting During a Cruise Stop?

Yes.

And here I have to admit I’m biased because Livorno is my home.

Most cruise passengers see “Livorno (Florence/Pisa)” on their itinerary and immediately assume Livorno is simply the place where the ship docks.

It isn’t.

Livorno was shaped by the Medici family and has canals, fortresses, a wonderful covered Central Market, a historic port and a completely different personality from Florence or Pisa.

You can walk through Venezia Nuova, our canal district, explore the city with a local guide, visit the market, taste local food or even see Livorno from the water on a canal boat.

For travelers who have already done Florence and Pisa, or for anyone who doesn’t feel like spending hours in a vehicle, staying in Livorno can make for a surprisingly great day.

Should I Book a Cruise Line Excursion or a Private Tour from Livorno?

There isn’t one answer that works for everyone.

Cruise line excursions can be convenient, especially if you’re comfortable traveling with a larger group and following a set itinerary.

A private shore excursion is different.

The day is organized for you.

You can ask questions, adjust the pace, and spend more time in the places you love.

For families, couples and small groups, that flexibility can make a huge difference.

And because you have a ship to get back to, I always plan the day with your cruise schedule in mind.

How Do I Plan a Private Shore Excursion from Livorno?

If you’ve been here before, perhaps it’s time for wine country, a smaller Tuscan town or the coast.
