A licensed tour guide, on the other hand, is there to help you understand what you’re seeing.
That means walking through Florence together, discovering the history behind Piazza della Signoria, understanding the Cathedral and its incredible dome, exploring Pisa’s Piazza dei Miracoli or hearing the stories that you simply won’t notice when visiting on your own.
For many of my shore excursions, I work together with professional drivers so that my guests have both comfortable transportation and a licensed guide during their day.
And yes, they are two different people!
That little distinction is worth knowing when you compare private tours online.
Can a Private Driver Pick You Up at the Cruise Ship in Livorno?
Depending on the arrangements and port authorization, a professional driver may be able to meet cruise passengers directly near the ship.
When I organize a private shore excursion with transportation, I coordinate the meeting details in advance so my guests know exactly where to go.
I personally join the tour once as well.
This is one of those practical details that may sound small, but when you have only one day in Tuscany, knowing exactly where your driver and guide will meet you makes the beginning of the day much more relaxing.
Do You Need Both a Guide and a Driver?
Not always.
It depends entirely on what you want to do.

Can You Visit Florence and Pisa from Livorno Cruise Port in One Day?
Yes, in many cases you can.
In fact, Florence and Pisa is one of the most requested combinations for first-time visitors arriving in Livorno.
But I wouldn’t plan the day by simply trying to fit as many places as possible into eight hours.
A good private excursion should start with your ship’s schedule.
From there, we can decide how much time makes sense in Pisa, how much you want to see in Florence and whether you’d like to visit a museum, enjoy some free time, stop for lunch or simply walk through the city.
Some of my guests want to see Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery.
Others want to experience Florence without entering a single museum.
Some absolutely want to climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Others are perfectly happy seeing Piazza dei Miracoli before continuing to Florence.
There is no reason for every private tour to have exactly the same itinerary.
That is the point of making it private.
What Should You Tell Your Guide Before the Tour?
You really don’t need to arrive with a perfectly planned itinerary.
Actually, some of the best tours begin with a simple conversation.
When someone contacts me about a shore excursion, the information that helps me most is:
- the name of the cruise ship
- the date you’ll be in Livorno
- your arrival and departure times
- the number of people in your group
- whether this is your first visit to Tuscany
- the places you definitely want to see
- whether you prefer museums, history, food, shopping or simply exploring
- whether anyone in the group has difficulty walking
From there, we can create a realistic day.
That last word — realistic — is important.
A private tour shouldn’t feel like a race across Tuscany.
How Important Is the Return Time to the Ship?
Very important.
Whenever I work with cruise passengers, the ship’s schedule is part of the itinerary from the beginning, not something we think about at the end of the day.
Driving distances, traffic, the time of year and the ship’s departure all have to be considered.
If your cruise leaves Livorno in the evening, that doesn’t mean I want you arriving back at the very last minute.
I prefer building enough time into the schedule so that the return to the port feels comfortable.
That way, you can enjoy Florence, Pisa or Tuscany without spending the afternoon checking your watch.
Is a Private Tour Only for Couples?
Definitely not.
I work with couples, families, groups of friends and multigenerational families.
Actually, private shore excursions can work particularly well when people in the same group have different needs.
Perhaps grandparents would like a slower walking pace.
The children need a break.
One person loves museums and someone else would rather shop.
Or perhaps you want to stop for a real Italian lunch instead of eating wherever a large tour happens to stop.
With a private day, those little decisions can be made around your group.
What If You Have Already Seen Florence and Pisa?
Then I wouldn’t automatically send you back to Florence and Pisa!
Livorno is surrounded by wonderful alternatives.
You could spend your day exploring the Tuscan countryside, visit a winery, discover a smaller town or stay closer to the coast.
And you may even decide to stay in Livorno.

My city is often overlooked because cruise itineraries advertise the port as the gateway to Florence and Pisa, but Livorno has its own story, canals, fortresses, markets, food and a very different personality from the famous Tuscan art cities.
For repeat visitors especially, a slower and more local day can be a wonderful choice.
How Do You Choose the Right Private Guide from Livorno Cruise Port?
Before booking, look beyond the itinerary.
Find out who will actually be spending the day with you.
Check whether you are booking a genuinely private experience or simply purchasing places on a small-group tour.
