Private walks, historic fortresses, a boat ride through the canals, and time to enjoy the flavors of Livorno.
Are you spending a night or two in Livorno? I’d love to show you around.
Maybe you’ve booked a hotel by the sea, found a place in the canal district, or decided to spend a little time here during your trip through Tuscany. If you’re wondering what to do while you’re here, we can plan a private visit together.
I’m Valentina Bassi, a licensed local tour guide since 2007, and Livorno is my hometown. Recently, I met guests at their hotel and spent a lovely day sharing some of my favorite parts of Livorno with them. We had breakfast inside the Old Fortress, explored its underground passages and ramparts, walked along the historic harbor, and took a small private boat through the canals. We also visited the New Fortress and enjoyed local food with wines from the Tuscan coast at the Central Market.
Here’s a little of what your time in Livorno could look like.
Let’s start from your hotel or meet in the historic center
If you’re staying in Livorno’s historic center, I’d be happy to meet you at your hotel and show you around my hometown.
If your hotel is outside the center, you can come in by bus or taxi. We’ll choose an easy meeting point in advance, and I’ll help you work out how to get there.
You don’t need to have an itinerary ready before contacting me. Just tell me where you’re staying, how much time you have and what you enjoy.
Perhaps you love history, enjoy taking photographs, or always make time for a local market. Maybe a boat ride sounds wonderful, or you’d simply like someone to introduce you to the city on your first morning.
Your tour will be private for you and your travel companions. We’ll plan it around your interests, with time to ask questions and stop along the way.
Breakfast inside Livorno’s Old Fortress
On that recent visit, we began with breakfast inside Fortezza Vecchia, Livorno’s Old Fortress.
It was such a pleasant way to start: sitting down for coffee, getting to know one another and talking about the city we were about to explore.

A breakfast stop inside Livorno’s Old Fortress during a recent private tour.
After breakfast, we visited the underground passages and walked along the fortress ramparts. As we moved through these spaces, I could show my guests how the fortress developed over time and explain its close relationship with the harbor.
This is one of the things I enjoy most about guiding: helping you make sense of the place around you while leaving room for your questions and curiosity.
If you’d enjoy including the fortress in your visit, let me know. I’ll check the opening arrangements for your date, including access to the underground passages and ramparts, and whether a breakfast stop is possible.

A walk along the historic Medici harbor
From the fortress, we continued along the Porto Mediceo, Livorno’s historic Medici harbor.
I love introducing visitors to this part of the city. Looking at the waterfront, boats and fortifications gives us so much to talk about: the Medici, maritime trade, and the people who arrived here from different countries and helped shape Livorno.
During our walk, we can follow those stories while enjoying the views and stopping for photographs.
And if something catches your eye, please ask. Your questions often lead to some of the most enjoyable conversations of the tour.
A small private boat through the Venezia Nuova canals
For the next part of our visit, we hired a small boat with a captain to explore the canals of Venezia Nuova.
I stayed with my guests on board, continuing the guided visit as we passed beneath bridges and alongside buildings facing the water.
From canal level, you begin to appreciate how closely the neighborhood’s streets, waterways and former warehouses fit together. It’s also an opportunity to see details and views that you would miss from the streets above.
A private canal boat ride is an option we can arrange as part of your Livorno tour, subject to availability and suitable weather. The captain handles the navigation while I guide you through the city’s history.
You can read more about my Livorno boat tour experiences. Boat hire is an additional service, and I’ll confirm the details and price when we plan your visit.
City views from Fortezza Nuova
We also visited Fortezza Nuova, the New Fortress, for views over the surrounding canals and city.
After exploring the Old Fortress and looking up at the buildings from the boat, this stop gave us another perspective on Livorno.
It’s interesting to see how the two fortresses relate to different parts of the city and how the waterways connect them with the surrounding neighborhoods.
Depending on your time and interests, we can include Fortezza Nuova in your route when access allows.
Local food and coastal Tuscan wines at the Mercato delle Vettovaglie
Our visit also took us to the Mercato delle Vettovaglie, known as Livorno’s Central Market.
It’s a place I enjoy sharing with visitors because food gives us so much to talk about: local habits, family recipes, ingredients and the everyday life of the city.
With my recent guests, we tasted local products paired with wonderful wines from the Tuscan coast. It was a chance to sit down, talk about what we were enjoying and discover another side of the region.

Depending on your interests, we can talk about specialties such as torta di ceci, the chickpea pancake used in Livorno’s famous cinque e cinque sandwich, or ponce, our traditional coffee-based drink.
If food and wine are part of what you love about traveling, tell me when you get in touch. We can plan tastings around your preferences, dietary needs and the businesses open on the day.
Food and wine arrangements, availability and costs are confirmed in advance.
Where to stay in Livorno
If you’re still choosing your accommodation, these four places offer different settings for a stay in Livorno.
Your choice may depend on whether you prefer the historic center, the waterfront or a coastal setting outside the center.
Hotel Rex for a coastal stay
Hotel Rex is by the sea in the Antignano area, outside central Livorno. Consider it if you’d like to combine time on the coast with a visit to the city.
You’ll find my photo and introduction as a local tour guide on the hotel’s Experiences page, where guests can learn about exploring Livorno with me.
From Hotel Rex, you can reach the historic center by bus or taxi. I’ll meet you directly in the center at a location we agree on beforehand, and I can help you plan how to get there.
Grand Hotel Palazzo for the seafront
Grand Hotel Palazzo is on Viale Italia, close to Terrazza Mascagni.
It’s an option to consider if you like the idea of staying by the sea and spending part of your visit enjoying Livorno’s waterfront.
For your private tour, you can reach the historic center by bus or taxi, and I’ll meet you at our agreed starting point.
Agave in Città for the Venezia Nuova neighborhood
Agave in Città offers apartment and suite accommodation in the Venezia Nuova district.
Consider it if you’d like to stay in the canal neighborhood and explore the historic center on foot.
We can arrange to meet at your accommodation and begin our walk through the surrounding streets and waterways.
Hotel Granduca for the historic harbor
Hotel Granduca overlooks the historic harbor near the Quattro Mori monument.
Its central position makes it an option for travelers who want to stay close to the waterfront and historic sights.
We can arrange to meet at the hotel and begin exploring from there.
How much time should you allow for a private Livorno tour?
A two- or three-hour walking tour can give you an introduction to Livorno, with the stops chosen around your interests.
If you’d like to combine a fortress visit, a private boat ride and food and wine tastings, allow more time. The visit I’ve described is an example of what we can arrange. We can choose the parts that appeal to you and build a realistic schedule around your stay.
